Was your pregnancy planned or a surprise?

Planned

If planned, how long did you try to conceive?

Second month after stopping birth control

How did you share the news with your partner, family, and friends?

My husband found out after he came home from an exercise session one Sunday morning. I literally called him to come home quickly, which of course sparked panic. When he came home, I showed him the test stick to lots of hugs and kisses. We kept the news private for a week before finally calling our parents (they live overseas). My parents reply was “Are you sure you’re ready?” which on hindsight was quite funny because, I mean, we were already pregnant. I think they were just in shock that their little girl is expecting.

Which was your favorite trimester?

Second trimester

What was your pregnancy MUST HAVE (craving, product, etc.)?

Indian cuisine. Dosa in particular.

Did you find out the gender?

Yes – it was a boy!

Were there any complications throughout your pregnancy?

None at all. I was pretty lucky.

Did you go into labor naturally or were you induced?

Naturally – at 39 weeks 2 days

How long were you in labor?

17 hours. It was rough!

Did you get an epidural or go all natural?

I got an epidural in the end at 8 cm dilated. Couldn’t take it anymore.

What was the best and worst part about labor and delivery?

I did hypnobirthing so I didn’t feel like labor and delivery was bad at all. That said, my labour started early in the morning and got intense straight away (1 min contractions every 3 minutes) so I went through the whole process without any food (no energy!). That was the most difficult part for me.

Were there any complications with your delivery?

I had a prolonged active labor as baby head was not turned enough to fit into the birth canal. The doctor ended up vacuuming him out.

Give us the stats!!

Born at: 00:19 Length : 48cm Weight: 3.085kg Gender: Boy

What was the hardest thing about the first few weeks of motherhood?

Lack of sleep, establishing breastfeeding, not knowing what baby wanted or needed. My boy was a winter baby and could not handle the cold, so kept crying from that too.

What is the best advice you received as a new mom?

There are a few: 1. Sleep when baby is sleeping. Best advice, if only I heed that advice :p 2. Seek help. Call on a few friends to cook meals for you one day a week. Freeze food beforehand. 3. Don’t worry about the state of your house. Hire help if you need to.

What is your best advice for expectant or new moms?

Fed is best! There are too much pressures to breastfeed and it’s great if you can do so. However, if there comes a point in time when the pressure is too much and it affects your mental state, or your baby is not flourishing, do consider formula feeding. It is a controversial topic but you should not be judged for the decision you make.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your journey to motherhood?

It was tough in the beginning. And scary at times. This is when you need people you trust around you. Seek help! The nights are long but the years are short and that is so true. The tough nights really don’t last at all and you will get the sleep you need soon enough.
