Liesel Teen – Pregnancy and Birth Story

Liesel is a mom and labor and delivery nurse from Raleigh, NC. She also has a blog that’s dedicated to educating other women about pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding! She is the creator of the brand new labor and delivery course, Birth it Up. You can follow Liesel and learn all about labor, delivery, and breastfeeding on Instagram.

Was your pregnancy planned or a surprise?

It was planned!

If planned, how long did you try to conceive?

I got pregnant the first month!

How did you share the news with your partner, family, and friends?

I told my husband right after I tested, and we were both shocked! He didn’t TRULY believe it, until I went to the store the next day and got a digital test that read “pregnant”! Ha! For our families, we told them each separately. For my family, it was Fathers Day, and I gave him a little kid-sized fishing pole (he’s a fisherman), and let him figure it out on his own! My husbands family got a little onesie that said “I’m what happened in Vegas”, because, we went on vacation with them a few weeks back, and that’s what happened!

Which was your favorite trimester?

2nd for sure! No morning sickness, and baby kicks, and no feeling like a cow!

What was your pregnancy MUST HAVE?

Sushi! I know that’s so weird, ha! But I craved sushi so much! (I gave in multiple times, just stayed away from the raw stuff ha!)

Did you find out the gender?

Nope, not until birth!

Were there any complications throughout your pregnancy?

Nope, it was pretty uncomplicated! I had some bleeding around week 13, but no nearest or anything needed. After that, it was smooth sailing!

Did you go into labor naturally or were you induced?

I went into labor naturally! I was 3 days past my due date!

How long were you in labor?

About 20 hours!

Did you get an epidural or go all natural?

No epidural! It was rough, but way worth it for me!

What was the best and worst part about labor and delivery?

The best part was definitely the anticipation throughout the whole thing, and knowing we would soon find out gender! The worst was being almost completely dilated, and pushing on hands and knees- pain like no other!

Were there any complications with your delivery?

Nope!

Give us the stats!!

I had a little boy! He was born at 3:00AM, on February 13th, 2017. He was 6lb 4oz and 19.75 inches.

What was the hardest thing about the first few weeks of motherhood?

Breastfeeding! I had low supply and it was a struggle!

What is the best advice you received as a new mom?

Every day gets a little easier…I know that’s cliche, but it truly did for us! The newborn days were rough, and each day he slept a little longer and I got to know him a little better and recognize what his needs were.

What is your best advice for expectant or new moms?

Take a breastfeeding course if you plan to breastfeed! Don’t just rely on help in the hospital!

Note: Liesel and I both love the online breastfeeding course, Milkology. I recommend it to every new mom that wants to breastfeed!

If you’re interested in going the natural route like Liesel, check out her brand new course, Birth it Up! It’s specifically designed for women who want to deliver their baby without an epidural (but I think it’s awesome for everyone). She covers topics like contractions, birthing positions, how to push, and much, much more!
