7 Gift Ideas for Someone who had a Miscarriage

What to Get Someone who is Experiencing Pregnancy Loss

Going through a miscarriage is such an indescribable loss.  It’s a loss that no parent should have to suffer.  Unfortunately, it happens all too frequently.

If someone you love has recently experienced this incredible loss, you might be wondering how to show your condolences.  A simple “I’m so sorry for your loss” and a listening ear (if they’re ready), really does go a long way.  However, it’s completely normal to want to do something more.

Comforting someone after a miscarriage can be difficult.  You don’t know exactly what to say, or what to get them, or how to handle the situation.  Everyone deals with this loss in a different way, but the ultimate goal is to let them know you care.

After my miscarriage, I didn’t want anything mementos or items that would remind me of the loss.  Although thoughtful, things like jewelry or wind chimes would just bring up painful feelings, and I had enough of those on my own.  I truly appreciated the gifts that gave me comfort, but didn’t stick around as an everlasting reminder of my loss.

Here are 7 gift ideas for someone who has had a miscarriage.

Flowers

Flowers are always a kind gesture when someone is experiencing a loss.  They let your loved one know that you are thinking of them.  You can even consider a plant or tree that they can plant in their yard as a remembrance. Sending flowers is a simple and thoughtful gift for someone who just had a miscarriage.

Dinner

When someone is grieving, it can consume all of their energy.  Dropping off a hot meal or having a meal delivered is always appreciated in times of need.  You can even get them a gift card for a meal delivery service and let them order a meal when they really need it.

A Care Package

Another great gift idea for someone who has experienced a pregnancy loss is a personalized care package.  Go to the store and grab anything that reminds you of your loved one; candy, snacks, a bottle of wine, etc.  Put everything in a basket and leave it on her front porch.  This thoughtful basket will let her know you’re thinking of her.

Cookies

A little treat can go a long way for someone who is grieving.  Sending your loved one a box of specialty cookies, or even making a batch homemade will absolutely let them know you’re thinking of them.  Sometimes comfort food is really can make you feel just a little bit better.

Ice Cream

After my miscarriage, my best friend sent pints of ice cream from a popular local ice cream shop.  I didn’t even know this was a possibility, but it really did mean the world to me.  I would drown my sorrows with a pint of ice cream and a terrible reality show, and for a few minutes a day, I could escape the sadness a little.  Sending ice cream is a great gift idea for someone who has experienced a miscarriage.

Candle

After a pregnancy loss, anything that provides a little comfort is appreciated.  A beautiful smelling candle can do just that.

Spa Gift Certificate

Self care can be extremely therapeutic; therefore, a spa gift certificate is a thoughtful gift for someone who has experienced a miscarriage.  Even if she doesn’t want to use the gift certificate right away, the opportunity to get away and relax when she’s ready will be appreciated.

I hope this list gave you some ideas on what to do for a friend or family who miscarried.  Always remember that it’s not the actual gift that matters, but the fact that you cared enough to do something.  Miscarriage is hard, but knowing you have friends and family there to support you if needed can make it just a small bit easier.
